A group of residents who say they waited too long for the construction of a bus shelter for school children have built one themselves, with the support of many in the Baan Baa community.
There are five buses that run from Baan Baa on school runs each day, and parents had requested a bus shelter for the children.
Resident Jo Everson said the group had spoken to council as far back as 2009 asking for one to be built.
“We’ve made it re-locatable in case council wants us to move it, but it’s stable, it’s not going to go anywhere,” said Jo.
“[But] I think council will come back to us and say ‘oh well, good, you’ve done it yourself’.”
The shelter is located on council land next to the fire station, on the corner of Yoorue and Henriendi streets.
Jo said it has been a big community effort to construct the shelter, which include residents Harley Dickson, Sarah Leete, Josh Shields, Taya Thompson, Scott and Jess Schmerier, Des Barton and many children.
“They were the ones who helped put it together, did the painting and artwork and put the structure together,” she said.
“We’ve bolted it to the ground, it is stable, but there’s no concrete slab so if we have to move it then we
can.”
Narrabri Shire Council was contacted for comment but did not provide a response prior to the newspaper going to print.
