The Narrabri Eagles will kick-off their new venture in the Tamworth AFL competition this Saturday when they host New England Nomads at Leitch Oval.
Expectations are high for the club’s first game of the season at home, with co-captain Trent Bruinsma hopeful of causing an upset against Armidale, the competition’s heavyweights.
“They (Nomads) are obviously the team to beat at this stage of the season,” he said.
“The attitude we are taking into the game is that we are a relatively unknown quantity and should use that to our advantage.
“We expect Armidale to be more wary of us than we are of them.”
That kind of approach is what Bruinsma expects the team to bring into every game this season.
Bruinsma was reluctant to single out specific players before the opening game, stating that the team, as a whole, would pose a few problems to the more established teams in the competition.
“We have a few guys who have plenty of experience after playing in the state leagues and Sydney competitions, which will make up the core of the team,” he said.
“We have a fairly potent forward line and a strong, agile back-line as well, which should cause plenty of discomfort for our opposition.
“Our expectations of the season ahead are that we have a good group of guys and are excited to have a Narrabri side back in the comp.”
The Narrabri club currently has over 30 players on its roster, which should give the Eagles some much needed depth in their squad as the season draws on.
Saturday’s opening test against the Nomads begins at 2pm.
In the other first round matches, Inverell Saints will take on the Swans at Tamworth.
Gunnedah Bulldogs will also make the trip to Tamworth, when they clash with the Kangaroos.
