The Shared Table rooms at Narrabri West have been bightened with a four panel mural specially created by Sydney artist Hilary Latta with a little help from her friends.
Hilary was invited by her former colleague, Carla Morris who runs Shared Table, to visit and do some artwork with local kids.
The result is a bright and colourful Australian scene, complete with kookaburras, galahs, kangaroos and cotton bolls, which now hangs on the wall at Shared Table.
“I came across anbout 20 ‘roos on the way into Narrabri,” said Hilary, “so I thought the ‘roos were symbolic of the area along with the cotton.”
Carla said she got to know Hilary when they both worked as volunteers at the Newtown Mission and has kept in contact.
Hilary has worked in many areas, has entered the Archibald Prize art competition and had a çhildren’s book published, ‘Buzzy Bees’. Her work has included some time in the Philippines.
“It was interesting there,” she recalled.
“I worked on paintings with the kids from city slum areas who had never touched a paint brush before, and the theme was ‘how I feel about this city.’
“Amazingly, their depiction of the way they saw their city was gabled cottages and trees.”
Meanwhile, Carla and her fellow volunteers at Shared Table, in the Anglican church hall at Narrabri West, continue their work to provide low cost food and essentials to people in need and the demand is growing.
Carla said generous support from donors and volunteer helpers allowed the service to operate.
