Narrabri High School Industrial Technology students again created some interesting and finely made pieces for their HSC projects this year.
The works of 12 students were on display at Betty Berriman Hall on Friday night.
Bars, desks, entertainment units, a guitar and a skateboard were among the pieces.
“My project is a box for my cards” explained student Luke Morgan.
Luke has long had a fascination with card tricks, so he logically built a box to hold his decks of cards.
His HSC project is a card storage box made of  16 year old Western red cedar.
“We had some pieces of cedar in the store room, which I showed Luke when we were determining the students’ projects” said Industrial Arts teacher Howard McFetridge.
“I don’t think he was too impressed with the original timber, but when I planed it up he could see fantastic grain and colour.”
The result is a cedar card box.
“I have always been interested in cards” said Luke. He has taught himself a repertoire of tricks.
“I don’t actually play cards, but I would be able to cheat at poker if I did” he adds.
“I just do card tricks.”
Lucas then demonstrated some tricks for an admiring audience of Rozina and Alex Mison.
HSC Industrial Arts student Brandon Wood has his sights set on a career in cabinet making or carpentry.
Brandon is passionate about working with wood and is planning to seek an apprenticeship which will take him into furniture or cabinet making.
Brandon sees the infinite possibility of working with wood, in craftsmanship and creativity.
“And even if you muck something up you can still make something good out of it” he adds.
Brandon has already made a number of items, and for his HSC project completed a computer and writing desk mainly made from Kalantis with a hoop pine veneer top.
Enthusiasm and passion for a craft are the sought-after attributes which employers look for and Brandon has both.
Lucas Warren doesn’t play guitar but has successfully made a professional five string bass guitar as his HSC Industrial Arts project.
The guitar looked a good fit when Lucas showed his work to his girlfriend Kiara Neave and mother Janine Hedley at the industrial arts students’ projects display on Friday night.
Industrial Technology teacher Howard McFetridge who instructs and mentors his students through the year has again guided the young craftspeople to successful completion of their projects. Narrabri High School is traditionally a high achiever in industrial technology.
