Narrabri author Richard Barry has been busy compiling the stories of Narrabri shire’s Anzac servicemen and women for publication in The Courier.
Richard has undertaken a huge research task, delved into official archives and histories and sought information from family members of the World War One soldiers to produce many detailed articles.
The products of his research will appear in The Courier’s feature supplement The Centenary of Anzac in Narrabri Shire 1915-2015 to be published in a coming issue.
And Richard’s stories will continue to be published in The Courier through this year and in future years of the Great War centenary.
The Centenary of Anzac 2015 marks the birth of the Anzac legend 100 years ago. However, the First World War dragged on for four years and each year until 2018 will bring its own centenary of the Great War’s battles and sacrifices.
Gallipoli was the defining campaign for Australia because it was the new nation’s first major World War engagement and because of the heroism of the Anzacs and their sacrifices.
Sadly, more costly battles were to follow in the ensuing years with casualty rates which dwarfed even the horrors of Gallipoli.
Richard Barry’s research will chronicle the people and events as they played out over the course of the war 100 years ago.
Richard is being contacted by many people who are bringing forward the stories of their family members involved in the First World War. He welcomes further contacts, either through The Courier (please email editorial@nwcourier.com.au) or directly to himself.
