The southbound lane of the Newell Highway, 10 kilometres north of Narrabri, was blocked for a short period on Sunday night after a truck came off the road.
Police were called to the scene shortly before 10pm.
“The driver was looking at a vehicle coming out of a property which had its high beam lights on at that point,” said Sergeant Gary O’Dwyer from Barwon Local Area Command.
“He’s taken his eyes off the road to look at the vehicle approaching off the property, and when he looked back at the highway he noticed he had veered a bit off the road, so he’s tried to correct the truck but it caused the rear trailer to flip over.”
The trailer came to rest on the highway, blocking the south lane.
Nobody was injured, Sergeant O’Dwyer added.
One resident has told The Courier she realised something had happened after hearing a loud bang, but didn’t think much of it until she noticed police cars arrive near the highway a short time later.
“I heard a big bang around 9.30pm, and about 30 minutes later I saw a couple of police cars with flashing lights outside,” she said.
“There was about two or three semi trailers which had stopped, so I couldn’t really tell what had happened, I thought there may have been an accident between a few of the vehicles just from looking at it.
“But then I realised they had stopped to assist, and the next morning in the light I could see the trailer had overturned.”
Yesterday morning the trailer was still on the side of the road, with wooden pallets scattered around it.
Police say it’s unlikely anybody would be charged over the incident.
“At this stage no action is pending,” Sergeant O’Dwyer said.
