The push for a youth centre in Narrabri has reached its next step, with the Youth Shack to be its official name.
A competition was run to seek entries for a proposed name and logo, with the winner Belinda Symons, who receives a $300 voucher courtesy of a fundraiser by the youth centre organisers ($150) and Authentic Trademarks ($150).
Eight community members have been appointed to the Youth Shack committee.
The appointments, endorsed by Narrabri Shire Council at last meeting, are Christine Ryan, Helen Dugdale, Ethan Wright, Gemma Ferguson, Jenny Campbell, Jody Sevil and Judy Simmonds.
The council agreed with a motion from Cr Ron Lowder that a Boggabri delegate, Julia Gillham, join the group.
Two councillors, Robyn Faber and Ken Flower, will be council representatives on the committee.
A barbecue was held at the picnic tables next to Panton Cottage, where the group hopes the Youth Shack will ultimately be stationed, on Tuesday afternoon for young people to lodge their interest in the initiative.
Those in attendnace threw around ideas for potential activities, such as excursions to places including Gunnedah and Mount Kaputar, and equipment for the new Youth Shack, such as a pool table.
Helen Dugdale told the group that the Rotary Club of Narrabri has offered a financial grant to fund some initial
activities.
Rural Chaplain Reverend Phillip Matthews, who is assisting in establishing the centre, said it would be a great facility for the young people of Narrabri.
“They’re doing a great job and I’ve said that I’d help them,” he said.
