A suspicion that Blue Green Algae is in Yarrie Lake has forced the Trust to ban swimming.
It hasn’t been confirmed that the material drifting in the water is Blue Green Algae, but the decision was made to stop people swimming as a matter of precaution.
Trust member Colin Caine says given the low water level at the lake it’s rare for the algae to be found.
“It’s very unusual when it’s dry to get it in there, usually when we get the big rain that’s when we usually get it,” Mr Caine said.
“As the wind changes, it blows across different areas, we’ve had it for a good couple of weeks, it’s not as bad as it was, it’s getting to the end of its stage.”
Signs have been placed along the boundary of the lake warning people against swimming.
Yarrie Lake caretaker Jerry Ralph says the number of swimmers over Summer has been small because of the ban on boats late last year due to the low water level - which he says is currently about knee high.
“We need a lot of rain, but we could see it tomorrow, next month or in 12 months, who knows?” he said.
Despite the low water level, caravans are still utilising the facilities.
“We don’t get people coming here just to swim, they do other things - boating and caravaneering - and they might go for a swim,” Mr Ralph said.
Despite a drop in caravan numbers over the Christmas to period, he says numbers are starting to grow again.
“Caravans are picking up over the past couple of days,” he said.
“But if the water level goes completely we’ll lose the caravans and I don’t want that to happen.
“It needs to look good, and it wouldn’t look good without any water.”
Authorities have been contacted by Mr Ralph in order to try and confirm that the material is Blue Green Algae.
