Year 12 Narrabri High School student and prefect Sally Maher has been named the 2014 winner of the Lillian Hulbert Memorial Prize.
Every year Narrabri Shire Council has the honour of presenting the prestigious Lillian Hulbert Memorial Prize to a local senior school student on behalf of the Hulbert family.
Wee Waa High School teacher Sharon Grellman, Narrabri High School principal Rod Jones and Father Max Davis this year assisted in making the difficult decision of deciding who would be short listed for an interview, and then ultimately deciding the final winner.
“Each nominee’s application was of high quality and truly exposed the wonderful generation of young adults that will be either furthering their education or stepping into the work force in the next couple of years,” said mayor Conrad Bolton.
The $10,000 prize was established in 2007 by Thomas Whip Hulbert in memory of his mother, Lillian Alice Hulbert, and has a focus on encouraging excellence.
Sally received the Betty Berriman Award for Academic Excellence in 2012, and has received a Narrabri High School medal annually since 2007. She also received a Primary Industry Centre for Science Education (PICSE) industry placement scholarship for Agriculture in 2013, which saw her spend one week at the University of Southern Queensland experiencing science-based courses and activities.
Sally says she is planning to put her prize money, which she may access when she turns 21, towards furthering her education in the future.
