Communities across a wide area of NSW will be better equipped to recover from natural disasters thanks to a collaborative project involving the Lions, Santos, GrainCorp and many local businesses.
Following the Victorian bushfires of 2013 and floods in northern NSW, Lions District 201N1, which includes Narrabri, initiated a project to help ravaged communities in the
future.
The Lions International project, ALERT, involved the creation of a well equipped, mobile ‘tool library’ which could be kept in a central location and quickly deployed to disaster
areas.
Narrabri Lion Vince Haire, chairman of the ALERT project, contacted fellow Lion Alan Hayward, chairman of the Victorian Bushfire Recovery Committee, to determine the best way forward.
The result is the tool library.
The library is housed in a new 20 foot shipping container donated by Santos which is equipped with a wide range of tools needed for post disaster recovery.
The container can be loaded onto a truck and quickly taken to where ever it is needed in the Lions District, which reaches from Yamba to Collarenebri and Premer.
If needed the tool library can be taken even further afield.
Tools can be borrowed by disaster victims for repairs and clean up.
Development, equipping and fitting out of the tool library was undertaken at the Narrabri Men’s Shed where shelving was built in.
GrainCorp added its support and the Australian Lions Foundation contributed $10,000 for purchase of tools.
The tool library is now ready for relocation from Narrabri to its new home in Tamworth where it will be ready to respond to regional disasters.
The tool library will be officially opened by the Lions’ first Australian international president Barry Palmer.
The local ALERT project is part of Lions International’s world wide preparedness program which
embraces disasters and community
emergencies ranging from influenza pandemics to floods and fires.
