Year 6 students from Narrabri West Public School have taken one big step towards becoming effective leaders.
The group of eight travelled to Tamworth on Tuesday, May 6, to attend a GRIP Leadership conference at the Tamworth Memorial Town Hall.
The students say there were many other Year 6 students in attendance, coming from schools all over the north west.
The students had an early start, travelling to Tamworth with their parents to make it to the conference which began at 9am and ran until 2:30pm.
The Narrabri West School students said the day was fun, interesting and a good experience.
There was a group of adults in charge of the conference and each ran their own segments and activities throughout the day which focused on what a leader is and how a leader should and should not act.
One particular aspect of the day which particularly grabbed the West School students’ attention was the need for them to be a ‘strawberry leader’, not a ‘watermelon leader’. The students explained that strawberries are the same on the inside as they are on the outside, whereas watermelons are not.
This made the students realise that as leaders, they must be the person on the inside that they appear to be on the outside and act the way they expect others to act.
The leaders also played a real life game of Guess Who, which encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones and interact with students from other schools, and took part in a workshop called ‘loud noises’ which taught them to go against the crowd and built up their confidence.
As part of the conference, students were shown video clips and asked to identify the different leadership roles which were demonstrated, some were called up onto a stage to answer questions about how to overcome various challenges.
The students explained that they learnt how to be ‘schoolyard superheroes’ by setting good examples for their peers and learnt how to improve their social and leadership skills.
