Ready to soar: Narrabri Eagles’ Michael Mulholland, left, Andrew Smart and Mick Miskle prepare to leave Leitch Oval for Inverell this weekend.||
Narrabri Eagles made it a back-to-back success at Leitch Oval last Saturday, after a dominant display from the home team in the second and third quarters handed them a 61-point victory over the Tamworth Swans.
The Eagles lead from start to finish having an impressive middle phase of the match to open up the game and seal another home win for the team.
Injured co-captain, Daniel Hughes said it was the sharpest game his side had played yet.
“The boys played really well, it was pretty to watch from the sidelines,” he said.
“From the first bounce we just looked up for it.
“We did take the pedal off for a while allowing them back into the game but overall another top effort.”
Hughes again praised the side’s young brigade of players coming through the ranks, highlighting that natural ability of youth.
“The young guys stood up again during the match, with half-forward Julio Hiemona being awarded players’ player of the match,” he said.
“He went really well and for someone who has never played before had so much time on the ball.
“Michael Leven and Kurt Warren also had their first runs for the season and showed good potential.”
The Eagles are expected to field a weaker side in their next match against Inverell Saints, due to the day change of the match.
Instead of playing on the usual Saturday afternoon, the clash with the Saints at Inverell’s Varley Oval has been moved to a Sunday.
The reason for the reschedule is the Group 21 rugby league match between Ashford and home team the Inverell Hawks will be played on the Saturday afternoon instead.
“We have a lot of guys out this weekend, which means we will be playing a very under-strengthened side,” Hughes said.
“It’s a blow for the team as we have got a bit of confidence now having those two wins in a row.
“The change in the day means that a fair chunk of our team won’t be able to be available for various reasons.”
Around the TAFL competition last weekend, Gunnedah Bulldogs were handed a massive thumping by the unbeaten New England Nomads, destroying them 222-29 at Worsley Oval.
The Inverell Saints dealt Tamworth Roos their first defeat of the season, beating them 93-58.
This weekend’s games see Nomads go toe-to-toe with the Roos and the Bulldogs square off against the Swans.
