omedian Paul Hogan is in the midst of a wide ranging sell out tour of regional Australia which has brought him to Narrabri.
Hoges will present his one man show at The Crossing Theatre on Wednesday night.
‘Hoges: One Night Only! the hilarious truth and nothing but the truth’ has been a huge hit with regional audiences.
Hoges’ first five shows of the tour sold out in Albury, Wagga, Nowra, Wollongong and Newcastle.
“There have been standing ovations for all the shows,” one of Hoges’ touring party told The Courier.
“It has been incredible.”
Tonight he’s on stage at Tamworth and then Hoges is coming to Narrabri for his first visit.
Hogan is as popular - and funny - as he has been since he first appeared in segments on A Current Affair which led into the hit The Paul Hogan Show which ran from 1973 to 1984.
Then followed 11 movies, including the massive success of Crocodile Dundee which made Hoges an international star, winning Academy Award and BAFTA nominations for Best Screenplay - plus many millions of dollars for the star and the movie’s investors.
Paul Hogan was named Australian of the Year in 1985, and awarded an AM for services to entertainment in 1986.
Along his successful career journey Hoges has co hosted the Academy Awards, and won numerous entertainment industry accolades.
He remains the definitive Aussie comedian.
At the end of last year Hoges completed a hugely successful Australian capital cities tour.
Now he has brought his one man show to the bush and capacity audiences are as enthusiastic as their city cousins.
“It has been fabulous,” Hoges told The Courier today.
“I did the cities tour and we got thousands of emails from country centres and venues saying ‘why don’t you come here, we can’t all get into the city!’
“So I said to producer director Dean Murphy who organises the tours, ‘let’s go to the country centres.’
“He said ‘OK, we have got a few.’
“I thought probably about ten, but we have ended up with 25 towns in 35 days,” laughed Hoges.
He is excited about his Narrabri show and has heard all about The Crossing Theatre.
“I hear The Crossing Theatre is the biggest country venue for the size of the town.”
His show is a two hour performance of stand up comedy, stories and unseen video clips.
Hoges said the nature of the show lends itself to smaller theatres.
“I like the smaller size, it is a very intimate show.”
What’s the style of ‘One Night Only! the hilarious truth and nothing but the truth?’
“It’s like no one else’s” said Hoges.
“It’s a unique story, so it’s a unique evening - lots of laughs.
“I have had the most bizarre and unusual life and truth is stranger than fiction - and funnier.”
Hoges’ well chronicled, and ultimately successful battle with the tax department may get a mention.
“The tax department might get a guernsey, they were so kind to me for about seven years, and finally said ‘oh, sorry’ we won’t be going any further, but never publicly apologised for smearing me around the world,” he commented.
But that is in the past and Hoges is very much in the now.
“It’s been a great journey,” he said of his entertainment career.
“One of the reasons I wanted to do the tours is to tell the viewers out there it’s all their fault.
“I never set out to get into the entertainment industry at all.
“Then the phone calls and ratings and the movies happened and they forced me into it.”
An important part of the journey was the role of his mate, and co-star on the Paul Hogan Show, John Cornell, who remains his best friend.
Hoges said he continually meets people from his past.
“Every town I go to I meet someone who says they are a relative.
“One claimed to be a cousin and it turned out he actually is a cousin. Mind you I have about 20 uncles and aunties.
“And I have encountered two guys in the last five stops who worked on the Sydney harbour bridge with me and I do remember them.”
Hoges’ current tour will take him as far north as Darwin and to Alice Springs and down to Mt.Gambier.
Meanwhile, there has been a strong response to Wednesday night’s show at The Crossing Theatre. Everyone wants to see Hoges and tickets are still selling fast.
“It will be a great night,” he promised.
“We have sold out everywhere. No one goes home at interval.”
