Narrabri Public School’s Year 6 students took over local government recently  and held a mock council session at Narrabri Shire Council chambers.
Year 6 has been learning about democracy in the lead up to an excursion to Canberra to visit Parliament House, among many other exciting sites in the national capital.
The students have been learning about the three tiers of government, federal, state and local, as well as gaining a greater understanding of the role of Narrabri’s local council.
Before the classes made their way to the chambers students elected their peers into roles of mayor, deputy mayor and councillors.
The budding councillors were accompanied by the mayor Cr. Conrad Bolton, council’s  general manager Diane Hood, corporate services director Paul Wearne and administration officer Libby Lantz.
They discussed matters revolving around child-friendly topics such as the planned Narrabri West skate park, Narrabri Aquatic Centre and the Nosh on the Namoi triathlon.
The mock council session was followed by a visit from Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton.
Year 6 teacher Sue McLeish says the students enjoyed their experience as members of local government with many inspired to become involved in local council in the future.
