Narrabri’s new war memorial was the venue for Saturday’s Anzac Day commemoration service which drew the biggest ever community participation.||
Narrabri witnessed its biggest ever Anzac Day commemoration and what may have been the town’s biggest ever community gathering on Saturday.
A powerful sense of togetherness and shared pride was evident among the thousands of people who attended the ceremony which marked the 100th year of the Anzac tradition.
Organisers, Narrabri RSL sub branch, Narrabri RSL Club and others had anticipated that there would be record participation and their hopes and expectations were exceeded.
The community’s gratitude to those who served and died and the strong desire to be present at the historic ceremony and part of Australia’s most solemn national day was reflected in the attendance.
The commemoration was held under blue skies and in perfect weather.
The entire route of the street procession was lined with thousands who applauded marchers from Narrabri schools, community organisations, serving members of the defence forces, returned personnel and family members of those who have passed away.
A flypast by light aircraft, and a RAAF Hornet F 18 fighter, which made two passes, were highlights of the proceedings.
Anzac Day commemorations across the shire, at all towns and villages, drew record attendances.
An estimated 300 people assembled for the 5am Dawn Service at the newly re-located Narrabri West memorial, an unprecedented attendance which was repeated at each service.
Narrabri’s commemoration ceremonies were led by RSL sub branch president Mr Ken Craddock, OAM whose measured, meaningful and solemn delivery was praised.
