Shire councillors Lloyd Finlay and John Tough at the Old Gunnedah Road section in contention on Tuesday following the council meeting. The line markings have now been obliterated.||
Tuesday’s council meeting agreed that line markings on a section of the Old Gunnedah Road should  be painted out because they could be dangerously confusing to motorists.
The decision was followed by prompt action from council’s new director of engineering services, Andre Kompler.
The line markings were obliterated the next day.
Tuesday’s meeting heard from councillors John Tough and Lloyd Finlay who said motorists were confused by the road lines adjacent to the entrance to The Mac Village and Arnold Street. They feared an accident.
“I was a passenger in a vehicle which was heading along the wrong side of the road because of the confusing lines,” said Cr Finley.
“Many other motorists have complained about the markings.”
Cr Tough said the problem was compounded for drivers coming into town when the line marking configuration combined with afternoon sun glare.
“Your observation is spot on,” Mr Kompler told the councillors.
Council agreed vehicles should be able to travel through without negotiating an ‘S’ bend.
Cr Robyn Faber supported the complaints as did the mayor, Cr Conrad Bolton.
Mr Kompler said there were other issues pertaining to the road surface which needed attention.
These were the subject of discussions between the contractor and The Mac Village.
Council agreed the lines should be blacked out in the meantime and the tar patcher was swung into action.
Cr Finlay today commended Mr Kompler for the swift work.
In response to a question from Cr Faber, Mr Kompler said council had not yet signed off with the contractor on the roadworks.
