Discussions between Barwon MP Kevin Humphries and Moree and Narrabri councils took place today concerning the future of the Narrabri to Sydney and Moree to Sydney air routes, serviced by Brindabella Airlines.
Mr Humphries said the NSW transport department would investigate alternative air travel options should Brindabella Airlines be no longer in a position to provide adequate services to towns it currently has the licence to operate in.
It comes a day after the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) confirmed it had grounded a further six aircraft in Brindabella Airlines’ fleet.
Last month CASA grounded four planes over maintenance concerns, two of which have gone back into service.
The latest grounding means 8 of the airline’s 10-strong fleet have been taken out of service.
“The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has directed NSW regional air carrier Brindabella Airlines to conduct maintenance reviews on another six of its aircraft,” CASA said in a statement.
“These aircraft may not be flown until the maintenance reviews are completed and CASA has given approval for their return to service.”
CASA said it had identified additional inspection and maintenance overruns, leading to the decision to require six Jetstream and Metroliner aircraft to be reviewed.
Brindabella Airlines said the grounding would result in further distuptions to schedules.
“Brindabella Airlines have been instructed by CASA to carry out a maintenance review on six out of the airline’s 10 aircraft,” Brindabella Airlines said in a statement.
“This work will undoubtedly result in some disruption within our network. Brindabella look forward to restoring scheduled services very shortly and apologise to any of its loyal customers who may have been affected.”
Following meetings in Narrabri and Moree today, Kevin Humphries said Transport for NSW would pursue alternative options for air travel should Brindabella Airlines be no longer in a position provide a morning and afternoon service into the towns.
