Smoldering pile: Firefighters spent four hours containing a fire that spread through rubbish, vehicles and an old fiberglass boat shell on Wee Waa Road on Saturday.||
Thick black smoke billowed from the rear of Blue Dog Smash Repairs on Saturday as a fire spread through vehicles and other materials and threatened a collection of plastic in a neighbouring business, Namoi Wastecorp.
It started as a small, council-approved burn before spreading.
Two appliances and a Hazmat unit from Narrabri Fire and Rescue were tasked, with firefighters spending four hours containing the blaze.
Station Commander Shane Bradford said one of the burning piles contained an old fiberglass boat shell, which was largely responsible for the intense smoke.
It resulted in several people calling triple zero to notify emergency services of the blaze.
Firefighters worked carefully to stop embers from spreading south to the rubbish disposal company. Mr Bradford said his crew could have faced a major incident if the flames had spotted over. “We were fortunate to contain it where we did,” he said.
A small crew returned on Sunday and found spot fires inside the boat. Wearing protective equipment and using power saws, the crew cut the boat into pieces to extinguish the fires.
